Project Sewn Finale: She Dills in Black and White

What a fun ride this has been, these past 4 weeks.  Ryan was out of town on business for two of those weeks, and so my kids were subjected to many pancake dinners, and riffling through mounds of unfolded (but clean!) laundry to find clothes to wear, while I was changing my serger thread back and forth from black to white and over again, trying on my works-in-progress, and running to the fabric store. Again.

I've beefed up my wardrobe, which has been a refreshing change, since I haven't sewn for myself in ages.  I have always loved making skirts for myself, but seem to be short on tops, so throwing caution to the wind and making myself two blouses, a jacket and a coat has built my confidence!

I'm looking forward to putting into rotation all these new pieces, 

but mostly, I'm looking forward to getting my household in order once again and balancing my life a bit more.  It's amazing how much one can accomplish when there's a deadline.  And by one, I mean me, because I thrive on deadlines.  Just remember that if you ever ask something of me. Of course there will still be plenty of sewing (Sew All 26 still in progress!), but it seems much more doable without the thought of being judged and competing.

The nitty gritty of this week's signature look: 
It's been a long time since I've sewn a pattern straight up.  There's usually something I don't like about it, but this was fortuitous, because I loved every one of the details from Simplicity 2057.  I bought the coat fabric in the upholstery section, once again.  Seems I can't get enough of the stuff.  It's a woven cotton, which works nicely for our climate.  And because it's woven, either side is beautiful, so I used the reverse side for the inside collar/pocket flaps/epaulets and the back facing, just for whimsy.  The buttons are all glass, and I couldn't decide which ones I liked best, and when one cannot decide on buttons, one uses snaps!  That way I don't have to make buttonhole commitments and can change them out if, or rather, when I get the hankering.  I eked out the whole coat from 2 yards with only tiny bits of scraps leftover.  I am normally very vigilant about matching stripes and patterns, but I didn't have a choice with the minimal yardage, so when I was editing photos, it was serendipitous how the back yoke matched perfectly.  
The pants are self drafted and I used a stretch faux-leather on the front and a stretch chevron in irridescent green for the back.

While I love orange, I don't wear a huge amount of it.  And I've always envied green (my wedding color), I tend to wear a lot of black and white.  So I included it all.

And really, I don't have just one signature look.  I have six.  ;) Moments after this was taken, Drummer was knocked over by Clover and cut the inside of his lip and his chin.  After taking him to the urgent care facility and consulting my brother-in-law, we decided he didn't need stitches.  And miraculously, I didn't get a drop of blood on my coat.  This is what our life is really like.
