The first night in the hospital after Divine was born the nurse came in with a screaming, inconsolable infant and said, "Your baby is hungry."
What? Who? Mine? It was so strange to hear those words: "your baby". Such a huge adjustment to have this helpless little baby so entirely dependent on you, and it's unlike anything because there's no school, no degree, nothing to truly prepare you for something so life altering, not to mention significant.
Like how after a wonderful, thick full head of hair during pregnancy sometimes falls out to the point of panic after the baby is born. Or how all you have to do to get rid of the flakey scalp on a newborn is add a bit of baby oil and lightly rub during bathtime. Or how just when you think I can't do it anymore, your baby will give you a little smile, making all the sleepless nights and dirty diapers worth it.
I remember one particular night. I was a brand new mom and trying to nurse. We had moved away from all of our family except for Ryan's cousin, I didn't know anyone and was on a post-partum emotional roller coaster.
I had a blocked milk duct and was in so much pain, I broke into tears when Ryan asked what he could do to help. He didn't know, I didn't know, and it was too late to call the doctor. He suggested I talk to his cousin who lived close by. She told me her trick of positioning the baby's tongue at the blockage. I tried her trick and within a minute the pain had dissipated. I was so grateful for her little advice.
It's easy to forget once you get past each stage, easy to forget what that brand new mother is struggling with and fumbling through the firsts of an infant. At least it is for me, because I'm onto the next milestone or struggle.
I remember when I just had Divine and shortly after my sister had her first baby. She always know the latest and greatest and asked if I had ever used Butt Paste. Say what paste?! I hadn't even heard of it, but she swore by it.
Being the obedient younger sister I was, I bought a tube the next time I ventured out of pajamas and our apartment. Diaper rash was more of an issue with some of my kids than others, but when it was, IT WAS.
I could see (and smell) instantly why she loved it so much. Boudreaux's Butt Paste doesn't have a medicine-y smell like so many other diaper ointments do, and it works. Period. It stays, it protects and it makes that pesky diaper rash go away or never even attempt a visit in the first place. I've used it on all 6 of my kids and love to share that little bit of advice if any mom ever asks me if I've got a good solution.
Happy bottom makes for a happy baby.
In fact, just the other day Drummer had a rash that had manifest itself in not such a nice way. He was even more angry than usual about having his diaper changed, and I could tell he was in pain. I grabbed the Boudreaux's Butt paste and slathered him up. It doesn't seem to sting like a lot of other brands. By his next diaper change, things were already beginning to improve. Happy baby, happy momma.
Boudreaux's Butt Paste can be found on Facebook. Not only do the people at Boudreaux's keep your baby's bottom happy, they want to make you smile as well. Watch their video for an instant laugh.

I always let my kids spend extra time in a warm bath when they have diaper rash. It does wonders for the rash. I also use desitin. I wanted to love the butt paste when I tried it, but it made my second son's diaper rash so much worse! He must be allergic to something in it, but who knows. I know it is a good product for others, because all f my friends swear by it, and I wish I could too, but it doesn't seem to agree with my crop of boys :-)
ReplyDeleteThe Boudreaux's Butt Paste is the only stuff that works for me! We've tried other less expensive brands but we came back to Boudreaux's and never left! The thickness can't be beat. -Jen
ReplyDeleteWe used desitin because we got a TON of it when I had my daughter, but I've had many friends who used Boudreaux's. My advice to new moms is to relax. You can't be perfect, you're never going to be perfect, and neither is your baby. So the best thing you can do is laugh at mistakes, love your baby and your husband and keep on trying. :)
ReplyDeleteWe use barrier creams and air dry whenever possible.

A bath with lavender and tea tree essential oils, lots of diaper-free time, and the natural Butt Paste!
ReplyDeleteI am due on Thursday and am a first time mom, so I don't have any advice, yet! But I have heard that Butt Paste is great. I'll definitely be keeping it in mind for any potential diaper rash!
ReplyDeleteThird baby now, and three months old. With all babies I swear by an exercise ball. The 15 dollar ball is what I give to new moms. Calms baby in all situations except for hunger!

ReplyDeleteWe have tried everything, and plain old A&D works the best. Also a little bit of Caldesene powder works great as well. (I have found Caldesene powder at walmart.)
ReplyDeleteUsually I just let the kids air as much as possible to get rid of diaper rash. And I also put cream on every time, as it helps to prevent a rash.
To solve a diaper rash, I let them go baked as much as possible, then put a THIN layer of Burt's. Bees diaper ointment follwed with their baby powder or cornstarch. Haven't ever tried Boudreaux's, but if I win, I might! Thanks for the giveaway
ReplyDeleteSince we use cloth diapers, I use an all natural product, Earth Mama Angel Baby, so that it doesn't stain our diapers or cause them to repel liquids. I love that stuff, all the ingredients are pronouce-able and you can use it on any owie, not just diaper rash.
ReplyDeletei love butt paste! i may have shed a tear when my tube emptied and i still had a lot of other brands left.... but if we get one that won't go easily with those, we will be running to the store for some butt paste! it was the only thing that took away my first daughters really bad one!
ReplyDeleteCoconut oil...works for diaper rash, dry skin, cradle cap, nipple cream, stretch marks...most anything!
ReplyDeleteWhen my little buddy has a diaper rash I try to give him as much bare bum time as possible. When it's time for his diaper to go on I rub a bit of coconut oil onto the rash. It works wonders. Also great for cradle cap and dry lips and skin.

Rashes hasn't been a problem for us so far, but there was a day when one hit and I was happy to have some samples of the butt paste. It worked great, and we've had no other problems since! One of my tips is to use lingerie bags to stick all the little items (socks, bibs, washcloths) for washing so they don't get lost (or eaten) in the washer/dryer.
ReplyDeleteWell, my go to solution when a nasty rash creeps up is to rub hyrdo-cortisone cream and anti-fungal on. It so hard to know sometimes whether it is fungal or just a nasty skin reaction, and just assuming it is both saves time.
ReplyDeleteFrequent diaper changes and diaper cream at every change helped us. :)
ReplyDeleteIt depends on the kid. Boudreaux's didn't work on my girls. It was like putting absolutely nothing on their bottoms. And Nicole, the younger one, gets diaper rash if you look at her funny. So we're back to baby powder all the time, unless she actually has a rash, and then it's Desitin Rapid Relief all the way. One of my friends, though, used to smear her baby's bottom with Vaseline, and swore by that!
ReplyDeleteI used white flour browned in a skillet, store it in a container and use it like baby powder. It dries the rash out without drying the skin out. I put it on my girls' butts at every diaper changing. But if I run out I always use the Butt paste over anything else because as you said it doesn't seem to sting. Both my girls are/were extremely sensitive skinned so it was a plus that I found anything that worked!
ReplyDeleteI use Butt Paste too on the little ones...but also it's great to use when running to help with chaffing!
ReplyDeleteCoconut oil is soothing for all kinds of skin irritations. And there is no mystery about what you are putting on your skin. :) peace of mind is priceless.
ReplyDeleteMy sister and nieces always did time without a diaper but I heard if you cloth diaper there are less rashes.

I use coconut oil, works like a charm.
ReplyDeleteI've never tried the Butt Paste. I've not had too much trouble with diaper rash (used Desitin and Aquaphor, and they worked for my little girl)
ReplyDeleteThe best piece of advice I received was that I didn't have to take every piece of advice I received! What a freeing thought, when everyone (and I mean everyone) has an opinion and is giving it to you whether you ask or not!

We love Butt Paste! But we live overseas (my husband teaches high school on military bases) and sometimes our local base stores don't carry out. So I always order a big tub of it (and a small tube for my diaper bag) online whenever it looks like we might be low. I love this stuff.
ReplyDeleteBoudreaux Butt Paste is my second choice. I LOVE the Burts Bees diaper cream. It smells great and it is super duper thick. It can last a few diaper changes. And it does really well with cloth diapers. I recommend it to everyone but Butt Paste is what I buy when I can't find burts bees.
ReplyDeleteI'm pregnant with my first (8 weeks until the due date!), so I don't have any tips or tricks to share... but I love reading and learning! I'm sure that blocked duct tip will come in handy someday :) Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteI always found a night time diaper rash relief cream was most effective and I also changed their diapers more frequently when they had a rash.

My advice (although it's been a while since a newborn was in the house) to new Mamas, is Take care of yourself so you can take care of your baby.
ReplyDeleteGet someone to help (spouse, friend, sibling, Mother) if you can, to take a shower and eat.
It will help tremendously.
Kindof like a "reset" button for the day.
Lovely.

ReplyDeleteBeing the youngest, and there by the furthest away from my Mom's experience with a baby I've always been a little old school :D... So in extreme cases we use straight corn starch, but for teeny break outs we use the knock off creams. I feel like the oinments are too hard to spread on... I haven't ever tried the butt paste but it always catches my eye :D I'm always happy to get advice from moms that aren't suffering from postpartum brain!
ReplyDeleteI like coconut oil, too, but sometimes it doesn't see to provide enough of a barrier, so it's butt paste to the rescue!
ReplyDeletestraight coconut oil is my go to for diaper rash. most of the times it seems like the rash is cleared up by the next diaper change! it's amazing stuff and can be used with cloth diapers without harming them!
ReplyDeleteI used butt paste too among other things. My kids rarely had rashes so I think I used about 1.5 bottles of cream on my two kiddos. My friend, whose little one ended up with open sores, tried EVERYTHING and she ended up using Triple Paste as it was the only thing that worked.
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine gave me this night cream from Mary Kay and it is awesome for diaper rashes. I have never tried butt paste though, believe it or not. I should!
ReplyDeleteI really like what you guys tend to be up too.

My little piece of advice is to not get overwhelmed with all the advice that people want to offer. When you are a new mama or a mama of 6 you will still get everyone's opinions. Take what you can use and don't stress about the others that don't fit with your mothering style.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a mom yet (my baby is due May 3rd) but the best bit of pregnancy advice that I've gotten so far had to do with morning sickness. I had hyperemesis gravidarum for the first half of the pregnancy, and the only thing that worked to control my nausea was a combination of Unisom and vitamin B6. It made me functional enough to eat a little and drink water, which kept me out of the hospital. I'm so grateful!
ReplyDeleteButt paste is great! Also baby powder
ReplyDeleteAs a new mom, Boudreaux was recommended to me and it was so awesome it is now my no.1 recommendation for all mothers!
ReplyDeleteWhat a funny ad! We discovered that baby powder worked on the small rashes and sometimes I would just use Vaseline as a preventative measure.
ReplyDeleteLove the Butt Paste! We only have had to use it a few times, thankfully, but it works like a charm!
ReplyDeleteWe use a barrier cream, change diapers regularly and give our sons oatmeal baths to avoid irritation.

Well, I've never heard of Butt Paste, but what I used to do, was try to let my babies lay on a diaper 'butt naked' and let them air dry for a bit. That seemed to be the only thing to help my babies.
ReplyDeleteBoudreaux's is good for more than diaper rash. My mom snuck some in to my brother's baggage when he went on a mission trip to India after the tsunami. He was embarrassed as only a shy college kid can be, but was happy to have it after all.
ReplyDeleteMy bit of advise is to use the mesh screen made to go over strollers over you and your infant so you can still hang out outside to watch your older kids play without having to worry too much about baby being covered in mosquito bites. I don't know if it works while walking around, but it sure helps when you're in recovery mode and sitting down.
I find the best thing is letting them go commando as much as possible. But you're so right, Butt Paste is wonderful stuff!
ReplyDeleteI totally use Butt Paste too!
ReplyDeleteAwesome add! It made me smile!
ReplyDeleteWe received a tube of Butt Paste as a gag shower gift and it turned out to be one of the best gifts we received! We used it exclusively and never considered trying anything else. Our little guy would cry when he had a rash and it was time for a diaper change -- especially the moment the wipe hit his skin. But the second the Butt Paste went on, he'd calm down and would resume happy baby status. Now we it to other new parents!
ReplyDeletethis is the product we use, we also cloth diaper and i think that keeps rashes down too

ReplyDeleteJust regular cream!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter introduced Butt Paste to me when she bought it for her new baby boy. I thought it was a gimmick but it turned out to be the best thing ever for diaper rash, also as a preventative!
ReplyDeleteI used Butt Paste on my kids as well. My advice to new moms is to take a nap when the baby naps. Sleep is precious when they are little and if you are tired, you can't take care of that baby the way you need to. I also usually tell them to listen to their instincts, they know the best out of anyone.
ReplyDeleteSorry it posts hubby's name.
Maybe we haven't hit the big time with diaper rash yet, but we've used lots of brands of cream and it always seems to help... Even an odd little pot of it we were "lent" (given) in Guatemala with Cohen. it worked great but it always felt gross to dip our fingers back into the pot that had just slathered a recent poopy bum... I'm glad the states sell them in tubes.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had more new mom things! Your list was spot-on about "no one ever told me that..."
as a soon to be new mom, any tips are welcomed...Butt paste is definately on my list!
ReplyDeleteI used Butt paste when needed with my first and it was great. I have it already for my second due in April.
ReplyDeleteWell, it's been 4 years since I had a child in diapers. Hooray! With 6 children, I have changed a lot of diapers! Diaper rash is never fun. I wish I had know about Butt paste 10 years ago! My best advice for new moms is this: Stay in your P.J.'s for at least a week. They can be cute P.J.'s. You can even change them multiple times a day if you want, just stay in them! When you are in P.J.'s everyone tends to be a little more mindful of the fact that you just had a baby. You tend to take it easier yourself. As soon as you put "real" clothes on, people expect you to be back to normal, yourself included. All of sudden you are going places and doing dishes and making dinner. When you are in your jammies, you are more likely to sit on the couch, snuggle with your children, NAP, important things!
ReplyDeleteI do love coconut oil. It is so good for rashes and also in chocolate chip cookies!

ReplyDeleteMy doctor gave me a "recipe" of basically Buttpaste and Lotrimin (the kind for feet--not the OTHER kind, ha). You can mix it in a container and keep it at the changing table, but after a while I realized I could more easily squirt a little of each in my hand and mix as needed.

So funny! I love this post. I'm from South Louisiana and Boudreaux's Butt Paste is as common as Tabasco. EVERYONE uses it. Which is to say that's how we've always handled diaper rashes. It works so well because of the Zinc oxide...or at least that's what I've been told. Our youngest is almost out of diapers, but we will always have a tube of BBP around the house!

Good to know I'll be buying a tube of this when this baby is born! I think the best advice is to follow your own instincts, because every baby is different and you have to do what works best for you and your baby.
ReplyDeleteOne of the things that I found helpful with my kids was to cloth diaper them and make sure to keep them dry. I was given Butt Paste for one of my babies and I did use it when it was needed and liked it better than the other options out there.

I assume somebody else has mentioned this farther back up than I can scroll on this slow connection, but we used 'association' -- not sure if there's a proper name for it. Most babies need to pee when they first wake up from a nap, so that's a great time to hold them over the toilet or a potty and use a cue (we would use the ASL sign for potty and make a little shushing sound like a running faucet). It's very cute to watch those newborn eyeballs that roll everywhere trying to get a lock on your sign. By about 4 months our kid had the hang of it (not to say that there were no accidents) and there was never any diaper rash -- indeed there were not many diapers. I guess if you're going to associate something with needing to go, it might as well be a potty as a diaper?
ReplyDeleteMy top advice for new moms is that it's ok to not do everything. Maybe it's nursing that's most important to you, or wearing the baby, or signing, or homemade food, or cloth diapers ... no single person *really* does it all, every day. Take care of yourself and do what you realistically can, being a stressed zombie doesn't help you be a good parent. Don't isolate yourself, talk to other moms, even strangers on the street! Hang in there! You'll be ok!
My kids have never had bad diaper rash, but if it started looking irritated I'd make sure they played diaperless out in the backyard for a bit. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteForget the chores and nap when the baby naps.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter never had a problem with diaper rash but think I would have to try this if she ever did. Looks like it works great.

I've recently started using lavendar essential oil on diaper rash. It soothes it, and helps it heal quick.
ReplyDeleteI have not actually had this issue because I am childless by choice! LOL I will say this though, adults get rashes and I have heard that this stuff really works on adults too! My advice to everyone is don't knock it until you have tried it! Just because it is labeled for babies or children doesn't mean it won't help out an adult. Hope this is OK and my entry can count!

Cool air from a hair dryer to make sure everything is super dry before putting a new diaper on! It has the added bonus of making the baby giggle. : )
ReplyDeleteI can endorse Beaudreaux's, too. It just works better than any of the other creams out there, much more quickly. And although I don't mind the medicine-y smell of other rash creams, this one is much more pleasant! A little goes a long way, too.
ReplyDeleteWe love Butt Paste! Has worked wonders on my littlest one!
ReplyDeleteMy kids aren't prone to diaper rashes but when they do get them we do a splash of apple cider vinegar in the bath water and an extra long soak, it seems to help clear it quickly.
ReplyDeleteI would use seventh generation diapers, change frequently and use a cream

To prevent diaper rash - dry completely and let that bottom get some air!
ReplyDeleteI use diaper rash cream and add some baby powder to keep it in place when the diaper is on.

My daughter has been really lucky and haven't gotten bad diaper rash. I used coconut oil with her cloth diapers and every night before bed (in her disposable) I use Burt's Bees diaper cream.
ReplyDeleteWe used the butt paste, and it worked, but it is not cloth diaper friendly. :-(
ReplyDeleteNow, if we get a rash, I have to switch to paper diapers for the duration, but the paste clears it up very quickly!
I'm a pharmacist and a mom, use Beaudreaux's at home and recommend it at work
ReplyDeleteWhen my son has too much fruit he gets bad diaper rash. A bath and butt paste always does the trick
ReplyDeleteour little guy is 4 months, and no diaper rash yet, so we haven't had to do anything :)

I'm a HUGE fan of Butt Paste, along with some fresh air.
ReplyDeleteI love Weleda diaper cream. No toxins and it's super easy on sensitive bums! If I had known about that when I first became a mom, we would have bought stock in the company. Ha!

We have never tried this paste but it sounds like it really works. We have always tried to keep the area dry and if there is a problem we would let them run around without a diaper as much as possible to get air on it.
ReplyDeleteKeep them as dry as possible while in diapers and let that butt air dry when you can.

ReplyDeleteNo special tips, just lots and lots of diaper cream applied frequently!

ReplyDeleteA warm bath with no soap, air dry the bottom and butt paste (we lived by this stuff with our daughter when she was in diapers)

ReplyDeleteButt paste is the ONLY thing I ever use on diaper rashes! I discovered it when my now 5 yr old was a baby–I now have a newborn son and only use Butt paste on him as well :)

Don't be so quick to re-diaper. Let their bottoms air out a bit.
