Once Upon a Thread Jump Start!

Are you sewing away on your Once Upon a Thread projects?  I can't wait to see what you all have been inspired by and what you've come up with!  Today, since one month doesn't seem long enough to hold all that needs to be experienced, we are having a jump start post! :)

When I announced Once Upon a Thread I received a most delightful email from LiEr of ikatbag.  She heard through the blogvine what I had planned and sent me several links of projects she has done over the years involving children's book inspiration.  As I clicked through each link I was more and more impressed, not only with her ability to come up with toy patterns, but her impeccable stitching and construction as well!  Take a look at just some of her children's literature inspired projects, and get even more motivated to get going on your own projects!

-------------------------------------

Our family has always loved reading. One of our favorite things to do with our three girls is read them stories from our own childhood libraries. Our girls are 2, 4 and 6 years old, and they've enjoyed everything from nursery rhymes, The Little Golden Books, JR Tolkien and George MacDonald to the wonderful, prolific stories of the English author, Enid Blyton. Some of my favorite sewing projects are inspired by the books we've read - Blyton's, in particular. Her boarding school stories inspired Kindergarten, her fairy fantasies inspired the Toadstool House, her wonderlands of candy and goodies inspired The Little Blue House, and her tales of farm life, my oviparous Chicken and viviparous Pig. It has been so much fun to bring those written stories to life in fabric!

This is a collection of some projects that had their roots in those books and stories. Below the montage is a description of each and clicking on each picture will take you back to the original post.

Left to Right:
Top Row: Masiy, Humpty Dumpty and Kindergarten
Second Row: Pig, Lowly Worm and Toadstool Houses
Third Row: The Little Blue House, Nurse Nancy and Strawberry, Puzzle & Jewel
Bottom Row: Chicken, Hello Kitty Invasion, Ma Bunny

-----------------------

Aren't they fabulous!?!  I mean look at Lowly Worm in his cute little Apple Car!  So fantastic!  Some of these projects are tutorials found on her blog, and others are patterns available for purchase.  Today LiEr is offering 3 readers a pattern of their choice from: The Toadstool House [intermediate-advanced], The Pig [beginner-intermediate] and The Chicken [beginner-intermediate]!  The winners get to choose which one they'd like!

  • Leave a comment right here: What do you have planned for Once Upon a Thread?  Which pattern would you pick?  What is your favorite children's book?
  • One comment per person.
  • Make sure your email address is linked to your profile, otherwise leave your email address in your comment.
  • I'll pick the winners and announce them on Tuesday [March 1st]!!!
Meanwhile, get working on those Once Upon a Thread projects! [I'm mostly talking to myself, my sewing machine is still cooling off and recovering from Project Run and Play!]

Thanks so much for this opportunity!

Winning the pattern would give me a kick in the pants to get going! My sister and I used to push live chickens around in a stroller but because of where we live my daughter will miss out on that so I thought a stuffed chicken would be the next best thing.

  111. This little piggy is so cute! Since we are in the middle of the Narnia series, I'll choose that as my favorite, today anyways. What to make? I can't decide how much time I want to spend on it yet.

  113. OH, so hard to choose a favourite children's book... as an adult I love 'The Lorax' by Dr Suess; as a parent I love 'Mr Archimedes' Bath' by Pamela Allen; as a young child I loved Enid Blyton & Richard Scarry's Busy Busy World books (I still have my very own Lowly Worm doll made by my Mum, my kids are now playing with it and asking for their own!) Making Lowly with the kids from that ancient pattern is probably my Once upon a thread project, although the requested mermaid tails are also a possibility.)
I would choose the Fairy Toadstool House, because I know it would be a big hit with my fairly fairy obsessed children.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I think I would choose the toadstool house! She is so creative!

    ReplyDelete
  115. I adore LiEr. I am continually amazed with the things she comes up with. My 4 year old has just discovered the joy of Richard Scarry, so my goal for March is to make her a big Lowly Worm. The bigger the better, in fact.

  118. What a combo! Two of my favorite blogs coming together for book inspired crafting! I feel like I have died and gone to sewing heaven. I would love to win an Ikatbag pattern. I already have the chicken pattern. I am not sure I could decide between the other two. What an absolutely wonderful problem to have. Fingers crossed!

  119. Oh I think I would have to pick the chicken pattern. So cute!

I plan on making a red riding hood cape, and have a plan for meking a Snow White doll.

My favorite children's book is a TOUGH question. Right now it's Snow White because my little girl asks me to read it over and over and it's so lovely to have her on my lap as we go through the story.

    What a fun giveaway, thanks!

  120. My children are currently on a kick of My Father's Dragon and The Island of the Skog, though we read anything we can get our hands on.

I've loved LiEr's post and fully have plans for Humpty Dumpty welcoming in some twins later this year.

I would love all three of the patterns, but would probably pick the toadstools because I would love to play with them with my boys.

  138. Wow! It is a toss up for me between the toadstool and the chickens. That is seriously a hard choice to make. :) Personally, I love Hansel and Gretel. The story is a bit morbid, but my vintage copy of the book provides so much creative inspiration. From the little outfits to the edible house. Also, anything with japanese illustrations like Taro Gomi or Shinzi Katoh.

  139. This is the first I've heard of Once Upon a Thread (got here via LiEr so I'll have to think about it. My girls are 11 months and just over 2 years so I dont find myself with much extra time but this sounds fun!
My youngest has been loving our Frosty the Snowman book, mostly because she loves music. My oldest has been changing favorites alot lately as I think her understanding is growing in leaps and bounds. She likes any books about mommies, like Are You My Mother? We always enjoy Karen Katz and Sandra Boynton books.
Oh and which pattern would I choose?! Well both my girls love boxes and containers and little figurines so I'd have to choose the toadstool house! (LiEr'a little blue house and Humpty Dumpty have been on my list of things to make for months now!)
