Remember how so many of you wanted to know how to make
Surprise!!!
I've put together a tutorial, but there's more. I have a source for the fabric over at Ruffled Fabric.com who is generously offering 2 winners 1 yard of their lovely ruffled goodness and 1 yard of matching colored elastic each! AND [I know, it just keeps getting better], for those who aren't one of the 2 winners, they are offering 10% off your order [use promotion code 10percent]!
Christmas in Joo-ly is right!
Supplies: Ruffled Fabric [1 yard] and elastic [1 to 1 1/2" wide]
1-Making sure the bottom of your fabric is evenly cut, lining up the ruffles, cut two pieces on the fold, using inside out leggings as a guide, including 1/2" extra for seam allowance.
2-I didn't taper the bottom of the leg, and I cropped mine as well. [No need to hem it, yay!]
3-Open up both pieces, making sure all the ruffles are down, put right sides together [not shown] and stitch with a slight zig-zag from the waist to the crotch on both sides, as shown in the photo.
4-Pull the two seams together and stitch around the length of the legs, making sure ruffles match and are all facing down
5-Stretch a length of elastic around child's waist. You want it snug. Overlap ends and zig-zag stitch.
6-Pin elastic on the inside [the wrong side], overlapping 1/4". You'll have to stretch the elastic a little bit to make it fit.
7-Zig-zag along the overlapped portion of the fabric.
8-Turn elastic under and stitch in the seam across the length of the elastic in front and back to keep the elastic down.
Azure loves her new leggings--can you tell?
Doesn't the color remind you of Baskin Robbin's Daiquiri Ice?
Ever had it? It's yum.
To enter the giveaway, visit rufflefabric.com and come back to tell me what you'd love to have in your fabric stash [they even have polka-dots!] and perhaps your plans for it?
Giveaway goes through Monday, July 5th, winners announced Tuesday.
10 % off promotion goes through Friday, July 11th.

ReplyDeleteI love the charcoal... and as if there's any other option - I'd make your fabulous leggings for my two girls, of course!
ReplyDeleteI would probably go with white because white ruffly bloomers are dreamy that go with everything but what about the red and the yellow with polka dots? So happy for the source. I hope I win too.
ReplyDeleteoh, those summer freckles and pig tails! okay, i LOVE polka-dot brown and the bubblegum pink. i would, of course, have to make me some of these bloomers (turtle-sized)! and i'm sure i could find some other uses for those lovely ruffles.

PS I worked at Baskin Robbins as a teenager and developed an unhealthy relationship with Daiquiri Ice. Yum.

ReplyDeletethanks for the chance to win,
missmelissaf @ yahoo . com
Whoops, forgot to tell what I'd make. I think it would have to be another pillow for my bed. The yellow would coordinate perfectly with my quilt.
ReplyDeletethanks again,
Melissa
I am loving the brown and white polka dot fabric. I love the charcoal too though. I think it would look lovely as a skirt, since I am not blessed with any little girls. It would probably look amazing as a sleeveless shirt. Ruffles are all the rage now. I can never decide what a fabric wants to be until I hold it in my hands though. It is amazing fabric though, in any color, or pattern.
ReplyDeleteWow, how to choose a color? I think I love the charcoal or the light pink the best. And of course I'd have to do ruffled leggings (light pink). Though the charcoal could look AWESOME as a flounce/train on a skirt.
ReplyDeletedefinitely Charcoal Cascading Ruffle Fabric
ReplyDeletelikely to make tights for my wee-one
i like the charcoal or the yellow polka dots!
ReplyDeleteeadelarm@yahoo.com
I'm so excited to find out how easy those adorable leggings are! I would choose white for sure (although the charcoal is tempting!), mostly because I was stunned with the beauty of the white ones you made for your older daughter, and I want some just like it for my own!
ReplyDeleteI like the gray, the red, and the turquoise, oh and the yellow. thanks for chance.
ReplyDeletelbroadstreet@tds.net
This is the thing, I don't sew, I mend. What is going through my mind right now is "I can't believe I ever bought my girls leggins". After looking at your tutorial, wow easy,I think I need to go buy some fabric and make my girls, and my nieces thousands of leggins in every color and pattern. The waste band is what frightened me but I think I can do it your way.
ReplyDeletesoooo sorry that would be the waist band...it has been a long night.
ReplyDeleteWhite. But I have 4 year old triplet girls who like to be individuals (each with a favorite color), so maybe bright pink, plum, and red.
ReplyDeleteI love the yellow with white polka dots and the charcoal! They would make darling bloomers or a fun sassy skirt for my little girl!
ReplyDeleteI've been loving yellow lately so definitely the yellow & white polka dots and I'd love to make a dress for my little one & try your tutorial as well!!
ReplyDeleteOMG! Talk about some super cute leggings! Can I say that I can't decide what I'd like to add to my stash? How about all of it. I love the dots. I should write them with more color combo suggestions!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for introducing me to ruffle fabric. I'm a ruffle addict and while they are too cute, they are extremely time consuming. But oh so worth it. Because of the time and effort involved in making your own ruffles, I'd gladly pay $15.99/yd for this beautiful textile goodness!
oh my goodness! Cutest thing ever! I think I'd make some bloomers, maybe a little crewcuts inspired dress or something... I love the yellow and charcoal, can't decide what's my favorite!
ReplyDeleteOh so many to choose from... I would pick the brown/blue polka with hopefully enough to make some pillow covers?
ReplyDeleteOhhh ruffled fabric, who knew?! We have three little ladies who would look just precious in those little britches!! Great Tutorial!!

I would have to have the hot pink and the yellow/white polkadots. My daughter lives in ruffles and pink and these would be perfect for her!
ReplyDeleteThe leggings are adorable. That yellow polka dot took my eye along with the hot pink. I have never seen this kind of fabric.

ReplyDeleteI would love all the colors but if I had to choose it would be white because of the versatility. Such a great fabric. An instant skirt, it's awesome.
ReplyDeleteThat is the most awesome thing ever!!! I love the look of ruffles but hate how much effort they are! The white would be great to keep on hand as a simple way to lengthen clothes my daughter outgrows, but I love red! The pink & white stripe would make an adorable skirt and the yellow with white polka dots would make a cute dress.
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I love the brown and white polka dot! I would also have to have some of the basic black.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing
The pants are darling. But this little ruffle fabric information couldn't have come at a better time!

ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome tutorial thank you so much! I can't wait to make my little beautiful angel some. I love the ruffle fabric this is the first time hearing and seeing it. I love all the different styles, colors, and patterns offered. I would love to win a yard of this fabulous fabric. Its so hard to pick which one I would choose I like the brown and white polka dots, same with the yellow dots, oh the pink and white is awesome as well, and that charcoal is so stunning and out of all of them I would more than likely choose the charcoal.

ReplyDeleteo.m.g.!!!!!!!!!!!! i love the fabric!! i'd go with either white or red and make some of the ruffled bloomers for my girls to wear under their christmas dresses i'm going to make.
ReplyDeleteLOVE. IT. The leggings you made are absolutely adorable! My little one would go cRaZy over a pair of these. Love all the adorable ruffle fabric options too! So hard to choose just one. But alas...I pick the Bubblegum Pink & White Stripe Cascading Ruffle Fabric. Fingers crossed to win and make a pair of leggings and a matching pillowcase top!
ReplyDeleteHola Katy! While I recognize that at this point you probably have enough fabric to make all your ruffled dreams come true I wanted to let you know where I ended up getting mine from. After my last post on your blog I hunted and hunted for it. I ended up buying some on ebay and some at Target. Yes, Target. My ebay purchase was 2.25 yards of stretchy (both ways) dark pink fabric with white polka dots. It was 16.50 plus shipping, which ended at 22.50. My Target purchase was more dark pink, but solid this time. On the clearance rack in the girls' section I found a skirt of ruffled fabric for $9. It already had a black, 1.5 inch elastic waistband so all I had to do to make it size 4T is take it apart and cut it down. A-dor-able. Thanks for all the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteOh so cute. I would have never thought off using this ruffled fabric for anything else but a skirt/dress. Thanks for opening my eyes...
ReplyDeleteI actually love that frosty light blue you've used, but don't see it on their site. I might choose the Navy, or white otherwise, and try making a summer top.

ReplyDeleteHi Katy, I came across this on Pinterest and it caught my eye (not because of the bloomers, though they are SO sweet!), but because of that orange dress!! How sweet it is!! Did you sew that one? I am looking for a patterm though I think I could probably draft one up - a lovely A-line shift is quite simple, I would think. I, of course, have NO experience with such an undertaking so I will appeal to my Mama to help!!
