Designed by Divine

Remember my nights with Divine?  I had her come up with a few sketches of dresses last night she'd like me to make.  She made some thumbnails of dresses, a couple of skirts and a shirt.  It was fun to see what is floating around in her mind.  She's like her momma.  Sometimes you don't know what she is thinking about unless she writes or creates.

This is the one I chose to actualize:  a flower covered dress with leggings.

I'm pleased with how it turned out and Divine is super proud that she designed it.

I didn't use a pattern, which made me a bit nervous with this embroidered fabric I got in Korea.  But, I've decided to stop saving my fabric and to just use it.  My stash...well, as someone during the last sewing soiree said, "you're like a fabric store!" as I pulled out different supplies for people's use.

Of course I'm not going to make something just to use up fabric, but as Divine and I sat on my closet floor deciding what to use, she pulled out an Amy Butler print that would have looked okay, but then I pulled out this salmon-orange embroidered piece and knew it would be fantastic.

The tab actually has no buttonhole on it.  The button is for looks.  I love LARGE buttons.  I just added a big snap to the other side.  That's the only closure on this dress--she can just slip it on.

I think the bloomer leggings were the perfect, one-of-a-kind touch.
Now, of course, the others have decided they want in on the fun.  WOW.  We'll see how I can interpret what they've sketched...

  8. Looks like you may have a budding designer on your hands. Love the bloomers. Did you sew each layer? They look great with the dress.

  9. So my almost 8 year old is standing over my shoulder right now and LOVES the idea of designing her own outfit. I think that is such a neat idea. But like others, what she LOVES is those leggings. I say they look a little complicated for me, but maybe you would share your secret/tutorial/or just a written how to for the rest of us:)

Beautiful design Divine! You may have a future in fashion.

  10. this is my favorite outfit yet, katy. i don't think anything in the world is cuter than little girls in A-line dresses that double as tunics. Not even kittens are as cute.
how about making a few more and posting them on etsy...

  11. I tried to do something similar with my daughter. She drew an outline of a doll and then we used it as a pattern to sew one. I love this look. Can you do a ruffle tutorial for those leggings? Or just a general ruffle tutorial? I know it's probably elementary, but I'd like to know how to do them right. Thanks! I love to see your projects!

And the idea of spending alone time with your daughter is so important. I wish my mom would have done that when I was young, with so many little siblings I always felt left out.

  29. I don't know you, but I read your blog because it was forwarded to me from a friend of a friend, etc. Great work, by the way. Anyway, I can't get these darn ruffled leggings out of my head. Tonight I decided to do a big search online for the fabric. So far I've only found a Chinese importer who will sell it to me if I buy 1000 kilos of ruffled fabric, which now makes it sound like I'm talking about a cocaine purchase. I'll let you know if I have any luck finding a place where we can all buy just a little less. Thanks for the inpsiring posts!
